ABORTION

The ancient heathens practiced exposure of unwanted children. This was allowed until after the naming ceremony at nine days old, when the soul enters the child's body. The husband (who was not necessarily the father) always had a say in this decision. In the old tales, whenever a healthy child was carried out and left outside, someone came along and adopted it. So, although the ancient people did practice indirect infanticide, adoption was preferred. The ancient heathens did not practice direct infanticide, but today heathens generally consider the practice of indirect infanticide to indicate that the ancient society would have allowed abortion if it had been available, and therefore it is allowed in Asatru.
